Fitness should be open to all. Respecting body diversity means we all need to do a better job of making gyms and other fitness spaces more inclusive for the LGBTQ community.
On my recent trip to the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference, I was looking forward to learning more about how I can do better in making my gym truly open to all. There were two sessions on the schedule that focused on physical health and fitness. One session, taught by two physical therapists regarding pelvic floor health for the transgender and GNC community, went very well. The other, called Combatting Dysphoria with Fitness, turned out to be very problematic. On this episode, I share why I left that session with red warning flags flying. (Hint: it’s a problem that isn’t exclusive to the transgender community and one that everyone needs to take care to avoid.)
